In the Presence of Others

"On that Day"

You painted a naked woman because you enjoyed looking at her, put a mirror in her hand and you called the painting “Vanity,” thus morally condemning the woman whose nakedness you had depicted for you own pleasure.

—John Berger, Ways of Seeing

The scenes of our life resemble pictures in rough mosaic; they are ineffective from close up, and have to be viewed from a distance if they are to run beautiful. That is why to attain something desired is to discover how vain it is; and why, though we live all our lives in expectation of better things, we often at the same time long regretfully for what is past.

—Arthur Schopenhauer - “On the Vanity of Existence”

The premise of this essay is one that I have struggled to conceptualize in a positive manner.

To appreciate the happiness that exists in those transient moments of the present, I believe that you must regard them, rather than as a “road to a goal”, as individual instances that in of themselves contain the beauty required for happiness. To assume the individual components of a mosaic are “ineffective”, particularly in analogy to the transient moments of life, feels to me a fallacy. It’s clear in both life and art, sometimes the smallest of things contain the greatest amount of beauty, and by metaphorical extension, happiness.

Javon Johnson - “Letter from Michael Jackson to Justin Bieber”

"Justin they will make a mummy out of you. So that even in death, someone will prop you up, attach the strings, make you smile pretty. So that your funeral, will be your greatest concert… Ever."

Sarah Kay and Phil Kaye - “An Origin Story”

I have seen the best of you and the worst of you and I choose both. I want to share every single one of your sunshines and save them for later. I want to tuck them into my pockets and give them back to you when the rains fall hard. I want to be the mirror that reminds you to love yourself. I want to be the air in your lungs to remind you to breathe easy. When the walls come down, when the thunder rumbles, hold my hand, and I promise, I won’t let go.
